With the end of the three-month long Writers' Strike came a huge goodie for all of us who were eager to watch new episodes of our beloved television again - nothing other than the 80th Annual Academy Awards!
How did Disney movies fare?
Well, let's just say that they had plenty to celebrate early on in the show. Disney/Pixar's Ratatouille (the movie about the rat who wanted to be a chef) won in the category of Best Animated Feature, beating out its nominees Surf's Up and Persepolis. Congrats, Ratatouille!! It has now joined 2004's The Incredibles as one of two Disney/Pixar films to win Best Animated Feature. I'm ashamed to say I haven't seen Ratatouille yet... but it has been on my To-Do List for quite a while now and I've been wanting to (along with Cars).
Enchanted also had a huge presence during the show. The film had been nominated for THREE of their original songs: Happy Working Song, That's How You Know, and So Close. The only original song that sadly didn't make the cut was True Love's Kiss (which I have to say was my favorite of the bunch!)
The three songs were performed during various moments during the show. First off was Amy Adams, who did a wonderful job performing "Happy Working Song" in the character of Giselle. Later in the show, Kristin Chenoweth (known as the original Glinda in Broadway's Wicked) performed "That's How You Know" on stage. I have to personally say that it was a bit random, as she was never in the movie... maybe Amy Adams wanted a break? Nevertheless, Chenoweth did a fantastic job in my opinion! Her voice can only be described as INCREDIBLE. The performance convinced me to go out and buy the Wicked soundtrack! Finally, Jon McLaughlin sang his solo "So Close," which had been featured during the ball scene in the movie. In fact, that whole scene was recreated during the show, with couples dancing on a ballroom-like floor. It wasn't my favorite performance, but I guess it was alright.
After all that, it's sad to say that none of the songs won the Academy Award for Best Original Song - instead, the award went out to the song "Falling Slowly" from the movie Once (also beating out "Raise It Up" from August Rush).
Miley Cyrus was also present at the Academy Awards... I'm not sure why (and I don't think anybody else was sure why either). When Kristin Chenoweth began singing "That's How You Know," I thought Miley was going to sing an Enchanted song as well... however, that never happened. Shrugs...
So while Ratatouille was the only Disney winner this year, the night was filled with plenty of magical Disney charm.
(As far as the other winners/losers went, I just have to say that I wish Atonement won Best Picture... the movie was beautiful in my opinion and completely worthy of its Best Picture nod. At least it won Best Original Score, which it completely deserved. Listen to the soundtrack if you're not convinced by just my words. And finally, I am so glad Juno didn't win anything other than Best Original Screenplay. Hate me all you want; I must be the only person in the world who didn't like that film.)
